About us
A message from the Chairman of the Friends of Weaver Parkway - Jim Greenwood
The aims of the Friends group are in all respects simple.
We wish to promote the Weaver Parkway to all members of our community and by promote, we mean making the Parkway available to the whole community, whether it be for a pleasant walk, a cycle ride alone or with the whole family or plant and wildlife spotting, the list is endless.
The paths have been adapted to be wheelchair friendly and ramps have been made for easy access, making the area available for everyone's enjoyment.
We aim to preserve the Parkway, by carrying out maintenance work such as tree thinning, or coppicing, (cutting back the tree trunk almost to ground level, to encourage new shoots to grow), weed control, hedge laying or just simply picking up litter. In short, to keep the Parkway a well managed, safe environment, yet at the same time, preserve all species of plants and wildlife.
We recently held a tree planting day and seven hundred and fifty trees of mixed native species were added. Folk were able to sponsor a sapling to remember a loved one etc., their memory living on for hundreds of years to come.
We also create new habitats and to increase our species count this year, we will be making bat and bird boxes for next spring.
An important aspect of our work is to educate. We run a number of themed days throughout the year, for example, bat evenings, fungi days, butterfly and moth recognition days, to name but a few. We do our best to pass on fundamental skills to anyone wishing to learn. We have organised some hedge laying training, habitat creation and land management training.
The Friends group is only as good as the skill base and enthusiasm of its members and we are always looking for new recruits. You need no specialised skills, just a genuine interest in the Parkway. This group is not about the big society, it is about our community. The more help we have, the more we can do.
If you are interested in coming along to help in any area, or to learn a new skill, please contact our Friends group secretary.
If you would like general information about Weaver Parkway, please contact the Rangers' office.
Our thanks to Anne and Martin Taylor for creating this web site.
